Friendship

Two good friends of ours leave next wednesday. It saddens me particularly when I realize the rarity of true friendships....

Friendship is easy when things are good. To go out to eat with, to watch a movie or play a sport with.....

But a friend lives up to its definition, not in those times.... but in the times of hardship and trials.

Hurricane Andrew destroyed everything that was ours, except us. Our entire neighborhood looked like a warzone..... We put pillows and sheets in the backseats of the cars as evening drew near and we prepared for an attempt at sleep.... I can still remember my parents friends wading through the water, manuevering through fallen trees to get to our home. Instead of watching the tragedy on TV and tsk'ing.... they risked their lives truly (amid flooded streets with downed power lines).... to come and find us... This is true friendship. but at 12 I didn't realize how rare it was.

Someone we knew and respected passed away last Thursday.
Uncle was respected by all, but he had one family in particular who were very close to them. So close they were joked to be virtually twins spending much of their days together. The children too, now adults, all good friends, perhaps brothers.

After Uncle passed away, they came, but with the others, in the evening, sat a spell and went on their way...

In my culture, if you are this close, you drop everything and you spend your time with this person.... they don't just want you there, they need you there.... to help organize things that may be too difficult to organize at the moment, and to make sense of what makes no sense to you.

Zig Ziggler once said "I can follow you around for ten years to get to know your character or I can follow you for ten minutes after a tragic or highly stressful circumstance and get the same analysis of your characther." Because its when times are tough that your true nature comes out.

I think that true friendship is a very rare gift... Ive heard it said before but these sort of situations make me realize it.

Who are the people when they know you lost your job, open their wallet to see how they can help you?

Who will not ask questions if you call on a Tuesday midnight and ask them to come over quickly?

A friend.

self-discipline

How does one acheive self discipline?

I remember reading Ben Franklin once made a list for himself of all the vices he wanted to rid of within himself. Jealousy, Excessive eating, Alcohol, etc. He made a chart to see his progress. He acheived most of his goals, but not all, yet the goals he reached were of high caliber.

I think Islam is an excellent religion to master self-discipline. We are to abstain from pork, drugs, alcohol, and unmarried relations with the opposite gender.... in our day and age these things are difficult to do, but to abstain requires self-discipline.

Same with prayer, praying five times a day requires a lot of discipline....

Is it developed or is it something you are born with?

America suffers from a lack of self=discipline, this can be seen in rising obesity rates...alcoholism...teen pregnancies, high STD spreading.... I dont distance myself when i say America.... I am an American myself, and I struggle to discipline myself..... because if you dont discipline yourself, can you reach your true potential? If you let yourself go can you be who you could be? And if you don't become the best of what you could have been, is it not a shame?

But again the million dollar question remains, how to acheive it and maintain it...........

Full Time or Part Time?

I am going to start law school this fall.

I've wanted to be many things growing up.....whale trainer, dentist, doctor, fashion designer, interior decorator, or whatever else was on reading rainbow that week.

The three things that have not died out but stick to me are writing, teaching and becoming a lawyer. The first two I can easily explain, the last one I find difficulty explaining fully why.

I always have wanted to advocate, and I felt that with law I could do this well. i also am a life long learner type of nerd who is extremely excited about hitting the books again and buying new highlighters...

That being said, do I sound like I need to go full time or part time? With part-time I would stick to my job and take some classes as well. Not as easy as it sounds...the courses arent any easier for us who like to put more on their plate than can be eaten........ BUT by dropping out of the working force, I

a) leave a profession I know I like for one i'm not sure of, just have a "feeling" about...

b) out put money on the education and have 0 input back in........ yes my husband is a GREAT provider, but as someone who is used to working, it feels, well, weird not too....

Plus, as a woman who is 24 going on 25... I know that i have a clock and it does tick...

So whats better? Can't say for sure, but I know that I need to make a decision soon as I've told my work i'm working full time, and my school im attending full time....... one has to be told otherwise!
