I'll be locking them doors and checking them twice...

The "powers-that-be" at my lawschool came up with the genius idea to have face books. Like highschool yearbooks- with a few exceptions. They put your photo, home address, phone number, email, class year, mail box number and stick them on a shelf for anyone who cares to, to pick up and take home.... Does this seem unsettling to anyone else? You might think "if you didnt want your picture for all to see, why sit for the picture?" I didn't! They used our student ID pictures- Think drivers lisence. Do you really want that picture distributed campus wide? Vanity aside, isn't it a wee creepy that people have your picture plus all relevant information short of your social? Why does anyone need that much information? To send letters of unrequited love?

I know where your coming from. The risk is there. I have been in the facebook for almost a yr and so far so good. I don't allow all to see, but only my classmates.

I can't pick and choose who sees the pictures... they stick them out for all to see. Law students, undergrads, people wandering around... anyone can grab and take one home! It's weird:) Is yours like that?

Very strange . . . no way around this? You know, in Massachusetts, I think they require SS numbers on the driver's license. Perhaps, they have changed that aspect. Very strange too.

Aisha, No mine can only be seen friends and undergrad classmates at UofM. I don't have my address up nor my city. Just general stuff that people can get it from the web or anywhere. If U go "My Privacy" U can setup who see your profile or not........

Oh you must have something different at your school. These are not online... they are paper like a telephone directory they drop off once a year. It's an actual physical product that you picku p and take so you can't censor it.

That is terrible! Are they crazy?

That is weird and uncomfortable! You should be able to decide whether you want to be in that book or not!

thatz spooky!!

btw do you really look like a pink panther??

That is downright scary and just plain wrong. Is there any way to remove your information? If at all possible, do it ASAP!

That is just wrong. I guess since universities are private institutions they feel like doing the Stasi/Gestapo thing is okay.

Will they be held liable when someone gets stalked or raped or killed?

Aisha, If you had a stalking incident in your history......which I'm sorry you have had. This would give me the "shakes" big time.

Dem Soldier said...

Aisha yeah that's different.......No way will I be allowing that....

I'm sorry that it's already out there, Aisha. It is just wrong. I'm sorry to hear that you too had a bad experience with stalking before. I can imagine how vulnerable you must feel. Perhaps you can complain to the university and lead them to change this policy? Or at least give students the choice to opt out.

Hmm...I'm kind of torn, here. As a journalist, the online directory at umich was one of my favorite resources (tells you name, email, which email groups the student belongs to, phone number, home address, campus address, etc). There was also a yellow pages-type directory distributed campus-wide. And a freshman face book.

But we didn't have anything that COMBINED faces with all that personal info. Definitely sounds like a stalker's dream (b/c normal students prolly don't even know such a resource exists in the first place). Then again, a google search kind of yields the same information...

Sorry, chica :/

Yeah, NO GOOD! That just isn't right!

That's terrible. People really meant it when they said law school is like high school all over again.

I don't know exactly what the policy is at UMich but what you're saying does sound familiar. I'll look into it some more and see what they do here.

Before I got my student ID card, I did read somewhere that your picture may be used for different purposes. I think one was that your picture may be used on seating charts for large classrooms, the other may have been for a 'facebook'.

So before I got my ID picture taken, I asked the woman if I could re-take if I wanted. She seemed especially annoyed, almost angry, and said, "Why would you want to re-take it?" Because it's used for god-knows-what around here! I'd at least want to make sure my eyes were open in the picture!

I told her, "Because I might not like it [you miserable hack]."

She said okay you can re-take once. I don't know why it mattered so much to her, it took her but 5 seconds to complete the whole process. She definitely wasn't having a good morning.

Anyway, I decided not to re-take because I could tell from looking at the first that a second shot wouldn't be much better.

Now, I'm going to go see what else they'll do with that picture. I'll report back when I find out.

Sorry for the long post.

That would really weird me out. I can't believe they didn't at least ask your permission first in this day & age of stalkers!

Yeah it's very creepy. I dont know. Nadia I dont knwo if its a law school thing or its just how it is now. I certainly don't remeber student directories such as this in our undergard. I mean we had student directories online and I'm not that paranoid that I would mind my info there.. i think its the addition of the picture. I mean what are they thinking???? I would write a note and say if you're thinking of doing a student diretory I choose not to have my picture listed..? I mean its worth a shot right?

At UF, I remember you had to fill out a form to keep from having all your information listed on the school's online directory. I was thinking of making a similar request here. Having all your info in one place accessible to anyone on the internet is a little unsettling.

I think concept of "privacy" is history. In $ 29.99, people can have full background and details of you. Do you thing our cell phone conversations, emails, bank accounts and ever medical record are sacred ? . I had Dr. visit 2 years back. Privacyguard had even my blood report available to me in $ 9.99 !!!!!

We all are like open book...

Scary !!

say what? said...

i learnt something.
Never let anyone find out about the name of your mother. It can be used in banks :S

I would freak out if that much information about me got leaked to people i dont know. I ended up changing my cell phone number three times because of weird sales people.
