The chicken- it caught fire- or did it?

I'm sick. The usual symtoms, runny nose, fever, chills, itchy throat. A normal person would drink plenty of fluids and get some rest. What do I do? I run four miles (because I have been making really good time these days and wanted to keep it up) and decide to cook five meals including broiled chicken shish kebob which I've never done before but I saw this recipe and couldn't resist. In my defense the plan was not to make five dishes, but as I started prepping the sheesh I thought "oh why not just one more dish since I'm up" and so it went until stove top, oven and broiler were all going steady.

So I put the shish in the broiler and I'm chopping onions here, sprinkling parsley there when as I'm chopping the potatoes I'm about to roast, the smoke alarm goes off taking me totally off guard and in the process my brain neglected to tell my hands, "stop! let us see whatever is the matter" ouch! So as Kashif runs up to wave the smoke alarm off and grab me a band-aid as I'm hovering in a corner in pain I see an orange glare. I look under the pots and instead of blue flame its orange. I checked the broiler and all I see is fire. Orange and yellow flaming fire. So I throw the fire extinguisher at Kashif (smoke alarm still shrieking) and watched in horror simultaneously fearing the house would burn down, mourning for the shish that would never be, and relief I made four other dishes. Luckily Kashif had his senses about him and noticed that the wooden handles of the skewer caught fire (d'oh!) but the chicken was unharmed. (Infact they came out delicious, very bbq flavored)....

I'm feeling sicker than ever now due to overexerting and I'm really glad I made so much food because I aint going near a stove for a while...

Yikes!!! May be you should've used the chicken to make chicken soup! hehehe But yeah, looking at that picture...I wouldn't want to waste the chicken on soup hehehe!

Hope you feel better, it's funny I'm listening to the news...they're talking about bird flu lol! (ok, no that wasn't funny..sorry) Get well soon!!

greeaat!!! I just learned that a cow was diagnosed with mad cow disease so I'm steering clear of beef.... now chicken too? Hm, I wonder how Kashif will feel about being a vegetarian? :) I *should* have made chicken soup, that's what Kashif recommended but the sheesh looked so yummy!

hehehe...nah, I think you're safe...I know there have been some cases in Pakistan (I think). I just had Tandoori chicken *yum!* although I have a runny nose, I think I'm okay hehehe

Awww...feel better soon! The picture on your blog is making my mouth water. I'm jealous of the fact that you went running...I have been so lazy lately.

Were you having problems posting images on your blog before? Mine was fine before and now it's not working Grrrr!!!

Aisha said...

Yeah Enyur its only a matter of time before bird flu hits the US. Very scary. And yes was having problems posting pictures but its working now!

Rehtwo I hate running but lately I'm seeing improvements so I feel very motivated. Also, you should try the sheesh very very easy to make :) but be sure to squeeze loads of lemon/lime on the rice before you eat, gives a yummy kick.

I know its not funny but from a 'guy' perspective I was smiling thinking of a 'panicky wife'. I hope you are feeling better - take good sleep, drink water and warm chiken soup.

By the way, it was a cute post - if you read again - it has the upmost depth of love, life and innocency.

Slow down girl, you need your rest for the long weeks ahead! Chicken looks yummy, I am jealous, have been doing zero cooking since M is gone and living of man-n-chese and cereal. That is pretty scary about the burning pot, and having to bust out the fire extinguisher! When I first moved to ATL I had never used a gas stove before and the first 2-3 times I managed to catch two dish towels and an oven mitt on fire (picking up hot pots). Let me tell you that "inflammable" stuff in oven mitts smells really bad when it burns...

koonj said...

Oay, get some rest, girlfriend! I'm glad you're both safe. Ok, I'm glad the chicken is safe too. Well, at least you can stop cooking now, eh? Freeze the stuff for when you're desperate. And get some thera-flu.

Ja...learned the wooden skewer problem in the oven/broiler lesson 7 or 8 years ago. Who would have thought that they would burn? You are supposed to soak the wooden skewers in water for 24 hours before using them.....um....they still burn, just takes a little longer.

I went ahead and invested the money in some of those metal Persian kabob skewers and have never looked back.

You are so funny. Make chicken soup. Just do a google search for Jewish Penicillin (Jewish style chicken soup) and find one you like. I swear it takes most colds away. I made last week when i was sick and was over it in two days. This time, i don't have the momentum to get to the store to get the chicken to make it but i would if i could. Hope you feel better soon! Them kabobs look goooooooood and i'm glad you didn't burn down the house lol.

Shame on you, running four miles and cooking when you should have been listening to your body and getting rest! I am glad that you didn't burn the house down and that the food tasted good. Get some rest and feel better soon.

Aisha, wow.. you got me feeling hungry for some shish kababs and feeling bad for you!! hope you get better soon! glad to see you were still able to blog!!

Mystic, thanks:) It really was funny in retrospect thogh not at the time!

Southern when Kashif is out of town I never cook much. Cooking for one person is really hard anyways.

Koonj great idea I think I'll freeze some of this.

BAraka, Mia thanks, lol, glad it amused:) Baraka, I guess there's nothing like chicken roasted on an open flame! :) lol

Say what: Where have you been?! Were you banned by the blogspot debacle in Pakistan??

Rosie, thank you:))

Ash, yeah these were metal skeweres with wood handles... I dont even think they can be soaked... but on the bright side I now have 100% metal skewers as the wood burned off.

Wayfarer I will look that up thanks! I dont know if I can drag myself up to make it but if it will take this away I'll try anything. I'm supposed to be in class right now :-(.

Jane, I know:( Dumb Dumb Dumb....

Opinionated, well, not much else to do when you're lying in bed besides tv or internet, but I do believe I'm going to take a nap again.

General question if you're reading this: Is the template looking fine? Someone said that the menu is overlapping the words on some browsers?

momyblogR said...

Ok, first. I'm sorry you are feeling so bad. But man oh man, I laughed out loud....I swear, mentally I was in your kitchen and saw the entire thing. HYSTERICAL!

Glad the Hubbs was around. I shutter to think of the out come...not only the chicken. :):)

Feel better!!

Mommyblogr, glad it made you laugh :) It's funny in retrospect but very traumatic at the same time! :(

Raheel, thanks! and yeah, lol that was a (insh'allah) once in a lifetime chicken.

Shabs I guess its that time of the year when we all get sick :( Learn from my mistake and dont' work out if you feel bad. Get your rest!

Yasmine, welcome! Glad to have made you smile :)

Chai, let me know how it comes out. Just warning you to be careful as you do it, and to sprinkle lots of lemon on the rice as it adds a nice kick. I also sauteed onions with it and it came out yum!!!

momyblogR said...

Traumatic...fair enough. But to read IT! You in the kitchen NOT feeling well, but chopping away nontheless. The alarm howls, scaring you, you cut your finger
:(...Hubby whipping in the kitchen so fan the alarm, while your trying to doctor your finger. You see flames shooting from the oven and think to throw the fire extinguisher AT your husband.

I suppose I find it so funny because it's certainly NOT beyond happening to me. I love to cook and spend a lot of time in the kitchen, but usually have WAY to much going on in the mean time.

I was sweating onions the other night for dinner, but at the same time had to solve a missing Barbie crisis. My onions were chared and on the verge of flames, I had to start over. BUT, I did find the missing Barbie, lol!

I'm really glad thing turned out well.

:)

It looks delicious! I also panic when I see fire :p Yay to Kashif for saving the day. LOL.

I LOVE the new template. Finally something worthy of your writing :)

I'm all caught up with your blog and I feel at peace. LOL. Sorry you're sick. If it's what I had the only thing that will help is laying in bed. {Hugs}

oh my god, glad your little fire didnt do too much damage! and hope you feel better soon sis

Aisha said...

Tee, aw thanks for liking the template, like I said in a prevoius post, I had NOTHING to do with it, but I'm glad you likes! I thought of you Tee when the fire erupted b/c you always say how you hate gas stoves and I always say how I LOVE them. Yeah this kinda changes my perspective slightly:)

Que Sera Sera, and BBCD thank you, still feeling yucky but your warm thoughts help me feel better :). Que Sera Sera, the chicken is delicious but if its even slightly overcooked it gets a little dry so be on watch:)
